TEACH October 2012 Newsletter

October is a busy month for TEACH clients.  Saddleback students are approaching midterms and some students are even adding an additional class on October 15th for an 8-week session.  UCI students began their fall quarter at the end of September, so they too are hard at work.  Other TEACH clients are actively involved in GED preparation and online coursework.

TEACH students have been busy this summer with recovery, school, campus tours, and activities.  In August, Saddleback students finished up their summer classes while UCI students were able to complete their July courses and start a second summer session.  Saddleback’s Fall semester begins in just a few short weeks on August 20th.

Sober Living by the Sea Treatment Center’s TEACH Academic Program has been helping recovering students succeed in the classroom for almost 15 years. Recently, the T.E.A.C.H. Program has employed the gold standard in career testing to help prepare clients to step beyond academia into the professional work environment.

TEACH has some fun and educational plans set up between the end of the spring semester, May 18th, and the start of summer session, June 18th.  The four weeks between school sessions will include our T.E.A.C.H celebration, college tours, team building activities, and a trip to the San Diego Zoo.

Recovery Programs for Chemically Dependent College Students

Currently, the body of literature concerning the topic of on-campus specialized support services for chemically dependent college students in recovery is quite limited. The population of U.S. college students in recovery has increased over the past 10 years, as the number of adolescents entering substance abuse treatment programs has increased by 65%.  Several institutions have developed programs that are designed to support students in their recovery process while maintaining academic enrollment.
